Tom was the apprentice and adoptive son of Harold Shellers. He left Harold some years back after an argument, taking residence in Rhode Island. He once had a relationship with Clara, but ended it when he left Harold's side. He is temperamental and impatient, and only shows any signs of opening up when he speaks to an Automaton.
His emotional issues aside, Tom is a brilliant engineer, able to create intricate and functional machines in much less than ideal conditions.
Clara is an old friend of Tom's, and his former lover. Her father worked under Harold Shellers, and Clara knew Tom through him. She has an older brother, Bill, who she did not know growing up. She is warm and friendly, but doesn't always think her actions through.
Clara is a highly skilled mechanic, but lacks a creative spark. She can build using plans, and can repair broken machines, but making her own from scratch eludes her.
Bill is Clara's brother. He was taken away from her when they were young by their mother, who he later ran away from. He spent his teenage years on his own in the Midwest, and had to learn how to survive very quickly. He shares Clara's impulsiveness, and has learned to harness it through the persona of Lonestar, a vigilante in the West.
Bill is a skilled marksman, but is often hindered by his own impulsiveness. His plans are rarely thought through.
The Silver Automaton
The Silver Automaton is Harold Shellers' last, greatest creation. It has an exquisitely articulated body, an almost lifelike intelligence, and is powered by technology completely beyond anyone else's understanding. He has quickly become a companion for Tom, who is fascinated by the Automaton's design.
Harold was the creator of the Automaton. With this creation, the world was changed. Slavery in America finally buckled under the weight of the Abolitionists, unable to continue when ethical labor was available. America's infrastructure changed overnight, with a tireless work force to create new railroads. Harold himself grew obscenely rich, and took in a recently orphaned boy, Tom Jeffries. Harold disappeared seven years ago after Tom left his tutelage, and was declared dead. He left behind a mansion, a host of mysteries, and a son he felt he had failed.
Edgar Baines is a short, malodious man who seems to be up to no good. He is hunting Tom down, and in the past had dealings with Harold, when both of them were much younger men. Harold has confided that Edgar is not to be trusted.
The Masked Man
The Masked Man is something of a mystery. He has no known history in the town, but has appeared several times. His hair would indicate that he's older, but his ability to leap over rooftops shows that he is in excellent physical condition. No one knows why he's attempting to steal Harold Shellers' will, or what he'll do once he gets it.
Anna Marie is a lawyer in Rocksborough, and a childhood friend of Tom's. The last time they saw each other was on the night that Tom lost both his arm and his father. She is refined and capable, a woman of bearing. Since Clara moved into town, the two have become friends.
